Assessing stains on a mattress in Great Haywood

Before the 2023 coronation, the Coronation Chair underwent conservation after centuries of use, wear and even graffiti.
Looking after it didn't mean erasing every trace of its history.
That distinction matters when cleaning household furnishings too. A successful clean and the disappearance of every visible mark aren't always the same result.
In this Great Haywood example, the customer noticed several marks on their mattress while changing the bedding.
It was still comfortable, and they wanted to keep it. But before booking, they had one question.
Would the stains disappear completely?
Finding out how the marks got there
Before choosing a treatment, I asked how old the marks were, what might have caused them and whether the customer had already tried cleaning them.
I also assessed the mattress material and condition.
Those details helped establish what treatment might achieve. The appearance of a stain alone couldn't tell me whether it would come out completely.
Older staining, or staining that has affected the material's colour, may remain visible after cleaning.
I explained that limitation before starting, so the customer knew what improvement we were aiming for.
We also discussed the mattress itself. Cleaning wouldn't change its support or repair physical deterioration.
In this scenario, comfort wasn't the problem. The customer's concern was the marked appearance.
Treating the affected areas
Suitable areas received targeted treatment as part of the agreed cleaning process.
The result was an improvement in appearance, with some older discolouration still visible.
That remaining discolouration mattered when judging the outcome. The mattress looked better, but describing it as completely stain-free would have overstated the result.
The expectations discussed beforehand gave the customer a realistic basis for assessing the improvement.
When could the bed be used again?
The work also needed to fit around where the customer would sleep.
The mattress had to dry fully before the bedding went back on and it was used again.
That drying period was part of planning the appointment. It couldn't be left until the clean was finished, particularly if this was the only bed available.
For a mattress enquiry, tell me whether you have another bed you can use while it dries. We can discuss the arrangements before booking.
Should you clean it or replace it?
Start with what's bothering you.
If the mattress is uncomfortable, damaged or no longer supportive, cleaning won't solve those problems. Replacement may better address what you need.
If it's still comfortable and your main concern is soiling or staining, an assessment can help you decide whether cleaning is worthwhile.
Ask which marks may improve, what discolouration could remain and what allowance you'll need for drying.
You should understand those points before deciding to proceed.
