Assessing pet odours on artificial grass in Eccleshall

You couldn't tell by looking.
When the horsemeat scandal broke in 2013, familiar products sold as beef became the subject of investigations into what they actually contained.
The packaging hadn't told the whole story. Neither had the appearance of the food.
There are less dramatic examples of that gap between what we see and what we need to investigate.
An artificial lawn can look green, neat and well maintained. Then you step outside and notice the smell.
A tidy surface doesn't tell you where an odour is coming from.
In this Eccleshall example, the customer's dog regularly used the same section of lawn. Rinsing helped briefly, but the unpleasant smell returned.
Before recommending treatment, I needed to understand more than how the grass looked.
What happened when it was rinsed?
The customer's experience was useful information.
A brief improvement followed by a returning smell meant we needed to consider what remained and whether the lawn was draining properly.
I asked how the artificial grass was maintained, where the dog tended to go and which products had already been used.
I also asked whether water drained away normally.
Persistent contamination or drainage problems could affect what cleaning achieved and how long any improvement lasted.
Cleaning could address suitable soiling and odour problems. It couldn't substitute for repairing an installation fault.
That distinction needed explaining before choosing the next step.
Cleaning the affected section
The treatment involved removing debris and using a cleaning and odour-treatment approach suitable for the artificial grass.
The example outcome was a fresher surface and reduced odour.
That was an immediate improvement. Its lasting effect still needed assessing after treatment, alongside the customer's ongoing maintenance.
Because rinsing had previously helped only briefly, it was particularly important to check whether the reduction in smell continued.
I wouldn't describe a better smell immediately afterwards as proof that every source of the problem had been eliminated.
Why maintenance and drainage still mattered
The dog would continue using the lawn, so ongoing care was part of the discussion.
The customer's maintenance routine needed considering alongside the treatment result. Any drainage concern also needed investigating rather than assuming another clean would resolve it.
The useful question was whether cleaning addressed the problem sufficiently, or whether something else needed attention.
That assessment helped keep expectations realistic.
